About Puerto Galera

Oriental Mindoro, Philippines

Puerto Galera, one of the oldest Spanish settlements in the Philippines, was established in the early 17th century as the provincial capital of Mindoro Island. However, its history dates back even further, with historical references to the area from over 1,000 years ago, tracing back to the metal age. For a detailed history, visit History of Oriental Mindoro.

Originally known as Puerto de Galleon, it was named for the safe harbor it offered Spanish ships, particularly during the typhoon season from May to November. Puerto Galera’s natural beauty and stunning harbor earned it a spot in the prestigious Club of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World - the only bay in the Philippines with this recognition.

Today, Puerto Galera is celebrated for its world-renowned dive sites, stunning tropical beaches, and vibrant tourism scene. White Beach and Sabang Beach, in particular, are popular for their lively nightlife, with numerous bars and restaurants.
